From Island to Peninsula

This section is under development

With the accumulation of sand at the mouth of the São Domingos River in the Middle Ages, the formation of an isthmus was inevitable, thus transforming the old island into the Peninsula. This event caused the population of Peniche to have an exponential increase, splitting into two areas called Peniche o Velho (Old Peniche), now called Peniche de Cima, and Ribeira (Creek), currently designated as Peniche de Baixo (Downtown Peniche).

However, the latter continues to be pronounced by the inhabitants as Ribeira or Ribeira Velha.

Peniche has developed. It was made of battles, fishing, bobbin lace, delicacies, the sea and the land. Now, Peniche is mostly made out of tourism and for the tourists and the for the locals we do this work, to show this peninsula, after being na island and once bottom of the ocean.
